Humpback whale (Megaptera novaeangliae) female and calf
North Pacific Humpbacks are commonly seen off the coast of Maui during the winter months, from November to May. These ocean dwelling mammals spend the summer feeding on small schooling fish in cool pacific waters, from Alaska to California. A majority move for the winter to the warm waters of Hawaii where they breed, calf and nurse their young. Humpback males use their unique 'song' to attract females and announce their location to other individuals. They sing, not with vocal chords, but with a collection of valves and muscles, and do so only during the winter season. You may hear them while swimming or snorkeling. Though currently endangered, populations are gradually increasing due to dedicated conservation efforts.
