Hawaiian green turtle (Chelonia mydas)
The beautiful and gentle Hawaiian green turtle is one of the largest of the hard shelled marine turtles. It can be seen around the reefs and in shallow waters of the Hawaiian islands where it feeds mainly on algae. All species of marine turtles are considered either threatened or endangered due to their sensitivity to a variety of factors, from ingestion of marine debris, to poaching, to the effect of human activity on nesting habitat. All marine turtles, except the leatherback, are found in shallow coastal waters which makes them particularly sensitive to these effects.
