American Flamingo (Phoenicopterus ruper)
The unusual and beautiful American Flamingo is found most commonly on the Atlantic coast of tropical and subtropical America. Its vivid pink plumage is a result of a diet rich in carotene. It prefers small shrimp, insects and plants, and will filter out many larger organisms through a comb-like structure on the tongue. Though it has very few natural predators, populations are in decline due to substantial changes in habitat from human activity and development.
Technique: Watercolor
